Gary
Kempston's work explores a personal vocabulary of abstract imagery
and sound. His practice focuses on the plastic qualities and physicalities
of creation, illustrating a fascination with composition and the use
of form and linear elements as instruments of investigation.
Multiple pieces, using different materials are worked on simultaneously
in order that each medium and artwork will inspire the other. He maintains
an open, questioning spirit and examines the relationship between
conscious design and chance. The resulting territory of these experiments
becomes the very subject matter for further inquiry and results in
a self-contained world of visual and sonic statements. lead by curiosity,
Gary sometimes incorporates re-used elements and found objects into
works, these unrefined materials become a fertile source of inspiration.
Through experimentation, the borderline between control and spontaneity
is tested and enriched by the changing possibilities of these working
processes. His artwork is created intuitively, layering and superimposing
line, sounds, texture and form. Using distribution, repetition and
contrast to question that which constitutes a homogeneous whole and
creating autonomous works that answer only to themselves. His aim,
through constant re-evaluation is to create pure abstraction and work
towards a new kind of pictorial and audio logic.
Gary is also a respected illustrator, regularly contributing to The
Guardian and freelancing for a wide range of clients in design, print
and new media.
